The story of hydrogen (H2) goes back hundreds of years. Discovered by English chemist Henry Cavendish in 1766 and used for industrial purposes for more than a century, this energy-packed gas has a key role to play in our transport methods of the future.
Green Hydrogen - It’s a hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources and it will play a key role in a clean energy future meeting the net zero carbon emission agenda.Hydrogen produced with green energy has a neutral carbon footprint, because its combustion produces primarily water vapor.
Green hydrogen can be used in many ways, for example to power land vehicles, trains, ships, and aircraft, to produce synthetic fuel, in the steel and cement industries, as fuel for turbines or to heat buildings – the applications are nearly endless.
Hydrogen benefits
Hydrogen is an increasingly important piece of net-zero emissions by 2050. It can reduce up to 60 Gt CO2 emissions between 2021 and 2050, representing 6% of total cumulative emissions.
India, Japan and the United Arab Emirates have ambitious hydrogen strategies. The United Arab Emirates aims to hold a fourth of the global low-carbon hydrogen market by 2030.
From a regulatory perspective, Dubai has two priorities: 1) creating a favorable environment for local hydrogen production; and 2) ensuring that local standards, to the greatest extent possible, reflect standards in leading export markets.
Through a local hydrogen strategy, Dubai may address the financial barriers to business incubation and through an export strategy (independently or in coordination with Abu Dhabi) may reduce the impact of cross-border trading.
The use of Free Economic Zones may also serve to help certain businesses associated with the local hydrogen sector operate more efficiently.
